While having breakfast, the owner started chatting with us and really gave a great local vibe of Aloha.

I had the chocolate chip pancakes which were super good! Filled with chocolate chips inside AND outside of the pancake! This paired with the hot chocolate was an awesome sweet breakfast.

I would definitely go back and would love to try the french toast among a few other things I saw on the menu.

Why does this place have so many good reviews?

The food wasn't good, and the service was even worse than terrible, and that's even taking "Hawaiian time" into consideration.  We were pretty hungry, and decided to try Ono based on the good Yelp reviews.  Everyone in our party of 6 was disappointed with their food.  My partner's sister was the last to get her food, and everyone else was at least half way done with their meal before the lady even realized she was missing a plate. She finally checked in on us, and then said, "Oh, I'm missing something, what did you order again?"  When she said the local boy, she ran up to the other lady working, and asked her what was ordered on the side of the local boy. Then, ran to the kitchen and said, "white rice!" Soo, they didn't have her order? Before she was done eating, the lady brought the check over. That's fine.  But, then 2 minutes later she came by and asked if we were paying cash because they are closing and shutting their card machine down.  Very rude.

Overall, the food lacked the flavor that you would expect from a typical Hawaiian food meal.  The meat was overcooked, the mac salad and omelettes were pretty flavorless.  There are plenty of other restaurants in the area with better food, like Java Kai!

I truly love breakfast food... it makes me happy, so I was very excited for this place. Mac/banana/coconut pancakes are something I make at home on special occasion and was super pumped to have them in Hawaii!! But oh boy was I disappointed...

I think the most important thing to note is how dirty this place is. Yes, it is supposed to be a low budget local family restaurant, but I've been to plenty in my day and this is the dirtiest of that type and restaurant in Kaua'i that we went to. You can tell just by looking around. We also sat on the right hand side wall near the back and there was a huge fan blowing at us that looks like it hasn't been cleaned in decades.

Also to note, TMI but necessary.... my partner and I have very strong stomachs. We have had street food around the world and never have had any problems. After eating here, we both got the runs.

    Price: It was about $13/dish

    Food:
Keep in mind that the prices on the menus have increased. They have displayed this with white out or simply writing over the old numbers, with that, you may get a surprise amount when you pay as not all the menus display the correct amount.

Local boy $13: This dish was tasty. The hash browns were nice and crunchy (+1) and there was a good amount of kimchee and sausage in the omelet.

Tropical Short stack $9: This is only 2 pancakes as opposed to the normal stack which has 3. There are slices of bananas and some coconut flakes sprinkled but no taste of mac nut. According to the description on the menu, it was supposed to be in the batter and sprinkled on top. When we noticed the lack of mac nuts, we asked the waitress who looked at us like we were crazy. Not appreciated.

Service: Slow, slow, slow! We came on Easter around 10am and were seated about 15 minutes after arriving. We ordered immediately since we knew what we wanted already and were hungry. Still, we waited 40 minutes for our food to arrive. I had to walk up to the register and wait another 15 minutes to get my check paid.

I would not come here again.

Service is SUPER slow, and there's a sign that says they will charge you for being grumpy. Well, who the heck wouldn't be having to wait nearly an hour with a growling stomach lol and the food was mediocre at best. Their fried noodles is just fried ramen, need I say more
